What is that clear, waxy substance on hair roots?
Q. Many times while I am tweezing I find hairs that have a clear, waxy substance on the root ends. Some have a lot more of it than others. Is this folliculitis? It is not the bulb. I know that. It's this waxy substance. I tweeze beard hairs because I might have a mild form of trichotillomania... Some of the hairs have it while many do not. Is it the root sheath or something? Is it a build up of dead skin cells?
Asked by - Sun May 10 19:59:50 2009 - Hair - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Not likely. You should notice other symptoms like irritation or redness. You can check with a dermatologist just in case. What you're describing sounds like the hair bulb, but it's hard to know without seeing it in person. You state that it's clear - though the hair bulb usually is white. You can easily find pictures of folliculitis on the internet, and compare that way. Like I said, see a dermatologist just in case.

Can I use a waxy potato for mashing?
Q. I bought a bag of potatoes on a budget - they were cheap and it doesn't even say what kind of potatoes they are, just says 'Potatoes' on the bag. However they feel very waxy and are very difficult to peel. Does this mean they are going to be crap to use as mashed potatoes? I want to make a shepherds pie but I won't bother if this type of potato is going to ruin the dish. They are within their expiry date, I only bought them yesterday.
Asked by CherryJelly - Fri Aug 27 06:53:51 2010 - Cooking & Recipes - 6 Answers - Comments
A. They will still mash ok, just not as good, but it will still work. Waxy potatoes go best for salads etc. The one's with dirt still on them are best for baking and mashing, have fun

What are those rainbow paper sheets that have a layer of black waxy film on top?
Q. Alright, me and a friend were just talking about random things and we remembered these novelty art sheets that we had used back in elementary school. They were like little, seemingly black pieces of paper, and you scraped off the black surface with a little stick or something to reveal a rainbow pattern underneath. And then you drew rainbowy images and stuff. Anybody know what these are called?

Right. Does anyone here know the difference between floury and waxy potatoes?
Q. Ive been in several grocers and asked the same question. They look at me as if im simple. There is a difference. I hate the waxy type, no good for anything. The floury are the fluffy kind that makes great mash. Ohter than King Edwards, which has been floury for years but suddenly turned waxy, can anyone suggest another kind? My kids refuse to eat anything that has lumps in it.

waxy liquid potpourri concentrate. how do i get it out of a cotton fabric?
Q. it's an antique cotton runner and i'd like to keep it.

A. The safest thing to do would be to use an ice cube to harden the waxy stuff as much as possible. Then you may be able to get the stain out with a mixture of half hydrogen peroxide-half water mixture. Keep it cool to warm to avoid shrinkage. Try the peroxide in an inconspicuous first, please. Best wishes.

What is the best way to get waxy film off hardwood floors?
Q. I have been using Orange Glo Floor Cleaner and polish, but it seems that after being shiny a bit, after walking on it for a while, it shows footprints and seems to have a waxy film. Does anyone know a way to get the polish or waxy film off without damaging the wood. I just want the hazy appearance gone. Any suggestions?

A. White vinegar and water. When it dries, you won't smell the vinegar. This is the best thing to clean wood floors with always and not only cleans but brings out the woods natural shine.

what could cause a waxy type substance seeping out of my face, scalp, nose, corners of my eyes, etc. ?
Q. I detoxed off morphine & vicodin Sept. 5th of this past year which I had been on for over 8 yrs. I've had a waxy kind of substance coming out on my face, scalp, in my ears, my nose & the corners of my eyes shortly thereafter. Could it be the result of the toxins left behind from the opiates or some other unrelated condition?

How can I get rid of the waxy skin on my dog?

What is the white WAXY residue that GRAPES have over their skin?
Q. Could someone tell me the properties (chemicals, infection figthing effects, pesticidal effects, etc..) of the waxy (white in appearance) residue that grapes have over their skin which is thought to minumise the loss of moisture. A very credulous friend of mine says that it holds something in it that my fend of cancer. Which I personaly think is a load of ***. Their source for this information is a "herbalist", an obvious redflag. So if anyone could shed light on what this substance is, and if it could have any possitive or negative effect on the human body. My intuative guess is that it is benign. Though I'd rather hear from someone who knows what they are talking about. Thank you.
Asked by Tine - Wed May 23 07:10:11 2007 - Botany - 3 Answers - 1 Comments
A. You pretty much already answered your own question, it's cuticular wax secreted by the grape. It's not that complicated chemically, mostly made of of routine alcohols and fatty acids along with about 30% cyclic terpenoid oleanolic acid. I think you could get about the same health benefit from eating candles, just make sure they aren't lit :) And yes again, you're also right in that the main function of this wax is to limit moisture loss from the grape, but it also serves to protect the grape from pathogens. Now the cuticle if the grape, the living membrane that surrounds the grape, is whole different deal, very complex chemically and there are lots of different things in the cuticle that could impact human health.
