What do different colors of ear wax mean?
Q. My ear wax is yellowish-green. One of my kids has dark brown ear wax. My baby has bright orange ear wax. What do the different colors signify? Is it a nutritional deficiency, or what?
Asked by KristenCO - Tue Oct 9 14:56:07 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Normal ear wax can be golden yellow, light brown, dark brown, or even black. The color can vary from day to day. Ear wax contains a pigment that hasn't yet been identified, so nobody really knows what causes the color change. It doesn't matter that each of you have different color of ear wax, different colors for different people can all still be normal. If your baby's is usually orange and all of a sudden it is black, then be ready to ponder why. OK? Hugs...

How much is it to have a professional drain ear wax out your ears?
Q. I cleaned my ears with a q-tip 2 days ago and this morning when I woke up I was somewhat deaf in my left ear (not completely deaf-I can still hear but the sound is low) my right ear is fine. I tried an ear wax kit but it doesn't seen to be working.

Why do cats like human ear wax?
Q. Now this is somewhat of a useless question but I've had four cats and every single one of them loves the taste of human ear wax. Somehow (!) my daughter found this out and we've tried it on all of them and they think its the greatest treat! Has anyone else experienced this with their cats and does anyone have any idea why they love it so?
Asked by lpa53 - Sun Jun 24 16:27:10 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This is really funny because my kittens do this too. In the morning, one of them will come in my room to wake me up. Then they will lick inside my ear. We have two kittens and they also like to lick inside each others ears too. Hehe!

How can I remove a lump of ear wax that is stuck to my ear?
Q. How can I remove a lump of ear wax in my ear? my dad looked into my ears and found that theres is a lump of wax in my right, and not my left. I also noticed something in my right ear as i move my head. How do i get this removed? its been 4 days already.

A. Pick up an ear wax removal kit at the pharmacy. They are really easy to use. Just read the directions. Don't use Qtips in your ears even though they look like they are made for that purpose. Qtips just push the wax further into the ear canal.

Why does my friend have so much ear wax?
Q. I know having ear wax is natural, but all I need to do is clean my ears out once a month, and I'm good. I have a friend that accumulates ear wax daily! The amount he has is enormous! Why's that? He has to clean it almost everyday or if someone stands next to him, they see ear wax coming out of his ears. Everything about him is normal, except the ear wax, lol Please advise, thanks!

A. The amount of ear wax produced is different from person to person. Unless it's causing pain or hearing problems there should be no reason to worry.

A. My doctor recently treated me for ear wax impaction. He tryed to remove it with his little tool but there was too much & it was packed in there tight. (no,I do not ever use Q Tips in my ears) My doctor told me to buy an earwax removal aid, called "Debrox." It comes in a yellow & grren box. I bought it at Wal*Mart. It's safe, gentle, non irritating & cleanses the ear with microfoam action. I wouldn't use anything else. I did try baby oil drops before I tryed the Debrox & the Debrox worked quicker. I once tryed hydrogen peroxide & it burned the inside of my ear because I didn't get it rinsed out properly in the shower. Ouch!!! :(

How can I tell the difference between ear mites and ear wax in cat?
Q. I just got a new kitten and I can't tell if it has a lot of ear wax or mites I am taking him to the vet next week but I don't want to introduce him to my cat yet if he does have mites sorry I left out a small detail of not wanting to introduce the new kitten to my other cat! This is my second one and I don't want to give my other cat the mites okay I got the kitten from PetSmart which he was originally from a shelter and he has all his shots, vaccines, and neutered

A. A couple of issues I see right away...you recently got a new kitten - great but, where did this kitten come from? A stray, the shelter, a friend? It would be VERY important to know if this kitten has been exposed to anything that it could pass on to your other kitty. Until your "new" kitten has been properly tested, vaccinated and generally been deemed healthy -- I would not expose the kitten to your cat nor the cat to your kitten. Either way it could be bad. Another thing the two cats should be kept apart initially anyway so that they learn the smell of the other and slowly introduce themselves. Just plopping the new kitten down in the livingroom and thinking your other cat will just love it is not reality. There will be hissing… [cont.]

How to reduce ear wax build up in cats?
Q. My cat has a lot of ear wax. She's been to the vet and there is no problem with her ears, she just naturally builds a lot of it. She absolutely hates getting her ears cleaned and goes into hiding for the rest of the day. I need to clean them twice every week. Is there anything I can do to prevent build up?

A. Your cats ears need to be cleaned, this is important to prevent infections. I supplied a link that hopefully will help you, but you can also call and ask the vet for an ear solution that can help make this easier.

Is there a good way to clear out ear wax?
Q. I was cleaning my ears and I'm guessing I went to far. I didn't hurt at all and I lost some hearing. I think I just pushed more ear wax down the canal. I've tried Hydrogen Peroxide and that didn't really help. I hear baby oil helps but I don't wanna risk having to clean it out with swabs which i know is bad. Is there any other method?

A. I had the same problem two weeks ago and another one five years ago. First I want to tell you that there is no reason to be afraid or to panic since it is normal for people who have the tendency to accumulate a lot of earwax more than what is needed by the ear. It feels awkward and uncomfortable though. So what I did was I stopped trying to get rid of it using cotton buds and I went to a nearby pharmacy to buy Auralgan it is a liquid which is dropped into the ear to make the wax softer. I put it on the affected ear and let it stay there for 5 minutes before i sleep. Then afterwards it was gone. However 5 years ago I had to visit my doctor to have it cleaned because Auralgan was not enough since I pushed the wax very deep into the ear… [cont.]

A. This one I know for sure: dip your Q-tip in mineral oil or baby oil. Your ear wax will quickly ball up and stick to the Q-tip.

Is there a correlation between ear wax and heapphones or ear buds?
Q. Over the last year Ibegan using earbuds/headphones to listen to music and books at work. I wear it mostly in my left ear and I think it may be creating more ear wax in that ear. is it possible?

A. You probably have a little 'more' wax, but more than likely a build up of wax do to the ear buds/headphones. The wax is created (the way I understand it! [I'm not a doctor.]) to catch foreign things (the wax acts like the sticky stuff on the hanging fly strips traps...) from entering and to keep the inner ear from vibrating away! I recommend some professional advice, cause whats good for me might not agree w/ you, be careful, the ear is a natural simple miracle, when healthy and unhurt! I purchased an ear douche at my pharmacy after consulting my Dr. and doing some research about it all. After following the directions it loosened the wax! I also do not partake in wearing either, as much I use to do! I figger why fast forward my loss… [cont.]

Is it normal for babies to have tons of ear wax?
Q. My son is 14 months and I picked huge balls of ear wax out of both his ears and it looked like there was more blocking his ear drum and I'm worried it is affecting his hearing. Is there anything safe to remove it because I know Q-tips are a NO-NO!
Asked by Brittany D - Sat Jun 28 23:59:46 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, earwax is normal but if we're talking about going into the candle making business, you should talkj to the ped about solutions. My ears produced a lot of wax when I was little. My mom called one my "leaky ear" and she had to put drops in it then rest my head on a pillow to let it drain. You may have to do something like that. Also, there may be a reason why the ears are producing so much wax, so definitely call the ped.

How do you get rid of bad ear wax?
Q. I've got really bad ear wax in my left ear only. It is so bad that it affects my hearing. When it is really bad I can hear myself chewing, but not able to hear much of what's going on around me. I've gotten those ear wax removal drops, but all they do is make a mess and make my hearing worse for 6 hours. It is really annoying and aggravating! I start picking in my ear in hopes to get it out and I know this is bad. I just want the ear wax gone! HELP!

A. I had the same problem and went to the doctor. He used the right tools for the job and removed a very large chunk of wax build up (problem solved). Clean your ears out right after taking a hot shower, the wax is softened by the steam. Use a q-tip but be sure not to got too deep with it. Good luck.

Ok, why exactly is ear wax different colors for different people?
Q. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with melantonin in the body, but then again, I could be wrong. Why do some people have orange, brown, yellow or even some form of another colored ear wax? Looking for information on a biological basis. Thanks.

A. If it's really bad, go to the doctor and have the nurse flush your ears out. You might also want to try a product called Murine EARigate - it has a reverse-spray nozzle which washes wax back out of the ear. For a few seconds after you might have a little trouble hearing though, but it goes away soon after and feels great! :)

A. Go to the grocery and get an ear wax removal kit. They have all natural ones that uses an oil - put five drops in your ear - let it soften the wax and then use the included bulb to use some warm to flush out the softened wax. This works much better than Q-tips because those can push the wax further down into your ear making it harder to get out.
