What are the trends for small business owners currently in the area of business ethics. A. Manifest Destiny is usually defined as the idea that the United States should and would extend to the Pacific Ocean. The idea goes back to before the Revolution, but was used in the early to mid-1800's to promote territorial expansion, trans-continental railways, and was the impetus behind the Lewis and Clark expedition, the Louisiana Purchase, the Mexican-American War, the Gadsden Purchase, etc By the way, ATJ, way to "copy and paste" without attribution. A. My company has us take "ethics training" courses online and in lecture several times a year. It's serious business...everything from not falsifying your timesheet, not taking gifts from customers in return for business, not claiming revenue in months when it wasn't earned to help sales figures, etc. Look up ethics training online and perhaps some examples of more issues can be found.

A. Well I work at a small local business (coffee stand), and here's my opinion based on what I have seen... The cost of goods is increasing, but wages aren't. That means we are paying more, and have to raise prices, which people cannot afford. Inflation is a huge deal, because it drives away customers. Everything continues to rise except for salaries, and small businesses are really feeling the backlash of this as people no longer can afford extra luxuries, even small ones. The economy obviously has a negative impact as well... people are much more likely to hold on tightly to what they do have right now. I've seen a lot of people who refuse to buy coffee because they are saving every extra penny in case another economic disaster strikes. If… [cont.]

Q. Hi, I am a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D student in a prestigious university in US. But I really want to get into business world after Ph.D. I am kinda confused what to do? Can anyone give some suggestions, like what is the baby step to really get started this dream? What is the advantage of materials science and engineering major student to do that? What is the disadvantages? For an engineering background student, what is especially important and challenging for him to interview with a business examiner? Thanks, guys.

A. There are a lot of industries that can use smart people, but most of them would not let you use your Ph D. An MBA might help, but you might want to talk to some adventure capitalists active in your field. (Check who has invested in some of the companies active in your industry). They would be looking for the combination of industry knowledge and business sense.

A. I'm not going to do the search for you, you can do that. I'll suggest some business issues that may be worth looking into. some of them are: How effective group discount marketing is on attracting new, recurring clients? Did social media really open the door to new forms of marketing? or is it an over-extended bubble? Do country-dependent businesses really deserve to exist? (ie. "too big to fail companies") Are there just too many barriers to entry for common-day entrepreneurs? Does technology promote growth or is it simply destroying the need for labour slowly? Is bureaucracy and multiple levels of management causing stagnation in big companies? Good luck.
