Is the machine manufacturing business in the USA slumping or growing?
Q. Has the equipment manufacturing industry in the USA suffered both because of the global economic downturn and the increase in quality equipment from China? Specifically roll forming machine manufacturers seem to have similar quality from USA/Canada and China.

Can someone claim materials for business purposes that was bought before they got a license?
Q. So say a person purchased materials for their business, but did not have a license beforehand...can that person still claim those items? For example, the materials were bought in May but a license was not purchased until July. Between that time, no items were sold. I was just wondering if you needed to purchase materials after getting a license or it doesn't matter, so long it is purchased within the same year. Any help or information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A. when you start your business and you have previously purchased items that become inventory, you will show that on your balance sheet as inventory and that will be offset by your "Contribution" if you don't have an inventory and you have the receipts for the purchase, of course you can prove you bought and it was used in the business not sure what you mean by a licence, in some cases the issuance of a license has nothing to do with what you can and cannot claim if this is a professional license that you were unable to perform the jobs prior to getting the license this might affect your income claim

What materials would I need for a small business in order to accept a payment by phone?...?
Q. I just need to know...If I was a home based business who took sales over the phone and delivered the materials myself, what type of credit card machine would I need to take a payment over the phone? would I JUST need a credit card machine...or is it more complicated then just needing that??

A. Visa or Mastercard would give you a machine like the ones carried by the employees in any Apple Computer Store. You enter the credit info and see if the charge is accepted or declined. You pay 2% of each sale for this privilege. Or you could have money wired to you..

A. Organizations like the VFW and American Legion might help you (just like the other guy suggested). However, anysoldier.com will not pay for shipping. You can get free postal supplies like boxes and such from the USPS website.

How does a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D get into business world?
Q. Hi, I am a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D student in a prestigious university in US. But I really want to get into business world after Ph.D. I am kinda confused what to do? Can anyone give some suggestions, like what is the baby step to really get started this dream? What is the advantage of materials science and engineering major student to do that? What is the disadvantages? For an engineering background student, what is especially important and challenging for him to interview with a business examiner? Thanks, guys.

A. There are a lot of industries that can use smart people, but most of them would not let you use your Ph D. An MBA might help, but you might want to talk to some adventure capitalists active in your field. (Check who has invested in some of the companies active in your industry). They would be looking for the combination of industry knowledge and business sense.

In Canada, are raw materials for a production business considered inventory?
Q. I make and sell hats. The hats are inventory but is the unprocessed fabric considered inventory as well or does it come under permitted business expenses?

A. Unprocessed material used in the production of goods should not be included under the same umbrella term as inventory. Inventory is a vague term with many meanings. Raw materials= materials used in production or Raw Materials Inventory Unfinished units= Work in Process (WIP) Inventory Finished goods= Finished goods Inventory. All are types of inventory, but they are not the complete manufacturing picture. If you were to include incomplete units and raw materials under one inventory, you would be overstating the value of the goods you have available for sale because you would be missing all of the other costs involved in production i.e. direct labour, indirect labour and indirect materials. Without those there is no way to calculate an… [cont.]

How do I buy materials and things to sell for my business if I don't have any credit?
Q. I need the materials to make the items being sold. But in order to do so you have to have money and/or credit. What is this scam - to recieve "business materials", keep them in a safe place and have someone pick them up?
Q. I'm pretty sure these are scams. But what is the scam? They say they want to send stuff to you then have you hold onto it untill they send someone else to pick the items up? Another variation i have seen its to receive the items, recieve lump sums of money and use the money to mail out the items. What is this? What are they trying to pull? Are they stolen or illegal goods?

A. First thing that comes to mind is that they are using stolen credit card numbers. They will use your address to ship the items. /

Is it illegal to wear shirts and carry marketing materials from a business to an open-air event in Ohio?
Q. Like wearing a shirt with your company logo, carrying around a bag of pens and coupons that you can distribute to anyone who you meet while you are at the event (if they want one). I'm not talking about laying anything down, and the event would be like a flea market or arts fair with lots of street vendors and people walking around to local businesses.
