What materials will I need to create permanent chalkboard art?
Q. I'd like to draw on a chalkboard with chalk and then seal it so the art is permanent. What materials will I need? I see restaurants do it all the time and would like to create one. Thanks in advance!

A. Easy, there is spray laquer. You could remove it with a chemical remover but it is very permanent and can be wiped with water, etc. If you use a chalk fixative it can still be removed. You can buy laquer in a spray can for $3 at a craft store, Home Depot, Lowes, etc in matte or shiny finish. Rustoleum Painters Touch Spray Lacquer is one national brand that is easy to find.

What materials does an elementary school teachers use throughout the day?
Q. I have a friend who just graduated and is about to be looking for jobs as an elementary school teacher. I want to give her a little graduation/christmas gift and thought it would be nice to make a gift basket of materials or useful things she would enjoy using. I would love to hear what other elementary school teachers use supplies/material wise throughout the day, and what nice things at home would you also enjoy?
Asked by Ashley - Fri Dec 17 12:29:14 2010 - Teaching - 4 Answers - Comments
A. That is a great idea. To add to the list of the previous poster, I would include more name tags (you can never have to many), good sturdy scissors in different sizes, clear contact paper in a roll (from Walmart. etc.), clear packing tape rolls. I would avoid teacher inspiration books, the kind with quotes about how great it is to be a teacher. You can usually find them in the checkout or bargain section of B&N. Something that would really be helpful would be a great book on classroom discipline or a book for new teachers. My favorite is "The First Day of School" by Harry Wong. Try to avoid anything that the school may provide for your friend, i.e. pencils, white-out, paperclips, lesson plan books, chalk.

What kind of materials can I use for my experiment on how vision therapy can help with a child's dyslexia?
Q. What materials would be used in this experiment. My hypothesis is "If children with dyslexia go through vision therapy, then they may overcome their reading problems." I already have my steps for it, but what materials would I use to bring this about?

A. I'm not sure about the materials but i learned the other day that most of the children with dyslexia were those who did not crawl before walking because crawling is the only time in our life when we do not use opposition for movement and during that period your brain is being trained how to recieve and transmit information based on the stimuli. Just thought that was interesting

Q. Me and my cousin want to build some small guns that propel the bullets my air, because buying gas is too expensive (and a waste of money). A. You should defonitaly try some fake toy planes and other objects and maybe sit them on something so the whole thing isn't touching the ground or surface :] I did the same thing just on cars tie string (really really light string or else it won't work) on a hair blow dryer. turn the hair dryer on and point it to the planes and see how they move around the plane - i you studied it right- you will be able to know what the string directions mean (drag and stuff like that) I hope it works out for you.

What materials are better fit for building a new home in the middle of the Arizona desert?

A. If I were to build a home in Arizona today, with the high utility costs, I would build it with Adobe. Years ago I worked on an adobe home in Phoenix during the summer. It was so hot in the sun that it kept triggering the breaker switch on my table saw. Without any cooling assistance, the inside of the home never exceeded 68 degrees. Properly constructed adobe homes are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Good Luck

What materials do you need to build a balloon car?
Q. My teacher wants us to build a ballloon car, but I don't know what materials I need except a balloon. Please helpt his project is due the Jan. 30 so I need some answers.
Asked by Jessica I - Wed Jan 23 13:27:04 2008 - Engineering - 3 Answers - Comments
A. A ballon car? So I'm guessing you will be blowing up a balloon that is attached to your car, and using the air inside the balloon to make the car go, correct?? If this is the case, you want your car to be as light as possible and as friction free as possible. Perhaps you could build the car out of balsa, foam, or even an erector set. You obviously want your car as light as possible to require the least amount of force (from the balloon) to propel it. The friction comes in with the wheels/axels. You want minimum friction in your axel/wheel connection and you want very little surface area contact between the floor and the wheel - in other words, dont use thick wheels. You also want to use a brand new balloon (if you are going to race it)… [cont.]

What materials do I need to install Laminate flooring?
Q. I'm planning on purchasing and installing laminate flooring myself in my girls room. But I'm unsure as to what materials I will need to install the flooring. Other than the flooring itself, what materials will I need to purchase to install a laminate flooring over a concrete foundation on the first floor. Is it fairly easy, or would paying someone to do it be a much better choice? Hint: I'm trying to keep the budget for the flooring to $200 for a 160 sq. ft. room. Thanks!

A. PLus the under layment, which you ll need 2 100 s/f rolls you should get the installation kit , About 20$ This comes with a tapping block spacers and a pull bar. You also need basic power tools such as chop saw and a table saw. Everything can be done on the table saw , its just easier to have a chop saw. A skil saw and or a jig saw can also be used. You ll need a hand saw to under cut the trim and of course a hammer. And a basic utility knife for cutting the under layment. If your half way handy you can do this yourself. It isn t hard. Saving 300$ (+-) in the process. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar . I ve attended several installation seminars as well as installed a few 100,000 s/f. GL

What materials can I use for making a roller coaster for my science project?
Q. It's due next week and I have no materials or any ideas for building it. You can't use kits. I need to know what i can use for the track, to hold it up, and what I can use as the vehicle. I need some serious help!
Asked by Max Cola - Sat Dec 30 00:59:31 2006 - Engineering - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Vehicle - a marble. The track - Should be made from a decent sized wire/rod that is easily bendable but still able to hole its shape during the exhibition. You should make 2 rails, so as to support the marble during the course. Thise way you will only have 2 points of contact between the track and the vehicle and there should be very little drag. I would also recommend ignoring any major structure for the track and just support it at the low and high points along the course. To connect the rods, you should be able to either solder them together or epoxy them. Good luck.

A. Flies come in through gaps in screens, open doors, windows and cracks in the foundation. Even drainage pipes are entranceways for flies. Make sure you have good tight screens and don't leave doors or windows open unless they are screened and that should be sufficient.

What are the best basic materials for making an airplane model?
Q. Okay so I have this project in Science class and a group of people and I have to create a model airplane that can fly. The only problem is, it has to be made of common materials (like rubber bands, paperclips, paper, etc.) and we can only use 3 materials, no less, no more. I need help very badly because we're supposed to bring in the materials tomorrow but we don't know what to use for that and we don't know how we'd be able to make the plane fly... Please help me!

Material is anything made of matter, constituted of one or more substances. Wood, cement, hydrogen, air and water are all examples of materials. Sometimes the term "material" is used more narrowly to refer to substances or components with certain physical properties that are used as inputs to production or manufacturing. In this sense, materials are the parts required to make something else, from buildings and art to stars and computers.
