What's the best organic solvent to remove solidified paraffin wax and stearic acid from glass?
Q. I'm measuring viscosity of molten ceramic slurries of paraffin wax and stearic acid. It can make quite a mess, and I need some kind of organic solvent to remove the bits have leaked out and cool down and solidify on the machine. Scraping it off works, but it leaves smears. Can anyone recommend an organic solvent? The slurries are are non-polar, so I'm assuming I'll need a non-polar solvent. Something simple that I can "borrow" from the Chemistry lab (preferably in a squeezie bottle... you know how the common organic solvents are usually in them like Acetone and IPA...) Acetone doesn't work... Toluene? Heptane?

A. well go to an auto parts store and get brake cleaner. It is usually a combination of toluene, hexane, and xylene packed in a oh so convenient spray can. It will pretty much dissolve anything that is organic. Keep it off your hands, it will strip you hands of your oils and you will get dry skin. And try not to breathe a lot of it either. It will also take a little wiping since the chains that you are talking about are so long. This way you won't have to "borrow"

Where can I find soft paraffin wax?
Q. I'm newly in the fire-breathing business, and I've been using other incendiaries to breathe fire, but I've heard from several others in my business that soft paraffin wax (liquid) is generally the best to use. Does anyone know where to buy it? Can I get it at Wal Mart? And how much does it approximately cost?
Asked by SE - Mon Feb 15 01:08:07 2010 - Performing Arts - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Yes, you can find it at Walmart. It's usually labeled "Lamp oil." Cost is a few bucks for a 32 ounce jar.

Ideas for casting materials?
Q. I'm taking a sculpture class and have made a mold of my object using silicone caulk, but I'm not sure what kind of materials I can use to cast in that type of mold. I know I can cast plaster, concrete, and paraffin wax but was wondering if anyone knew of some other (perhaps less common?) materials I could also use. Thanks!
Asked by ELIzabeth - Wed Apr 8 15:18:39 2009 - Sculpture - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Silicone will stand up to the melting point of lead, especially if you don't overheat the lead, and are making a limited number. Dump the lead casting as soon as it is solid to remove the heat soak effects to make it last longer. With release for safety, you can cast acrylic clear or colored resin in silicone. You could soften/warm modeling clay and push it into the mold and get it out if the mold is not too stiff so it bends the clay getting it out. Polyclay will probably release and the silicone mold will stand the baking temp of polyclay so you could harden it in the mold. You could buy or mix plastic wood and push it into the mold to make wood like copies. Takes a while to harden I think silicone will release, but you might do a test.

How can I melt Paraffin Wax with out a double boiler?
Q. I want to make candles for holiday gifts, but I do not have a double boiler in which to melt the wax.
Asked by ccyc - Thu Nov 19 16:46:24 2009 - Hobbies & Crafts - 2 Answers - Comments
A. If you have one of those metal hot racks, see if it fits inside one of your pots or inside of a frying pan. Pour water inside the pot or the frying pan until is covers the base of the hot rack, then place the container in which you are making the candles on the hot rack. Turn the burner on high until the water boils, then low the temperature to warm. The idea is that the water will warm the container without having the container touching the bottom of the pot. It works because I've done it.

Where can I buy blended paraffin wax cheap?
Q. I want to make home made scented candles and have checked e Bay, Amazon, Biz Rate, and many individual websites and the prices are outrageous. Where can I buy blended paraffin wax and get a 10-12 pound slab for about $10 to $12? The shipping charges cost as much as the wax and make it cost prohibitive. If I could get it cheaper than $10, I would like it even better. Thanks.

A. Plain paraffin can be found in any supermarket in the canning section, beeswax from any hardware store (cheap wax toilet ring). Can you add your own scents?

Q. Why is Paraffin wax bad fro the envrionment or why are crayons bad for the environment? thanks!
Asked by Beebz..xo. - Sun Mar 2 13:40:46 2008 - Chemistry - 3 Answers - Comments
A. There is no true evidence for this, however, the refining of paraffin wax involves getting it from crude oil which is not good for the environment. Itself, it is not very dangerous but the heavy machinery used often tears up and destroys an ecosystem.

At what temp can you pour paraffin wax into a container?
Q. I have some paraffin wax that I purchased today and I am making candles as Christmas presents but I am having some problems. The wax i bought does not tell me at what temp it is okay to pour. The melting point is 133 - 135 degrees F and low oil content. Please if you can help please do! :) Thank you so much!

A. 1 Place the hard paraffin wax in the double boiler set to around 200 degrees. Once the wax is melted, you can transfer it to a crockpot with thermostat that will keep it at 200 degrees. You need to keep it warm so that it will not harden and take the shape of the crock pot! 2 Add color wax dye and let it melt for about 5 minutes. After the dye has melted, stir it in and add some of the scented essential oil. Continue to stir the wax and don't leave it unattended. You should also have a candy thermometer to keep the temperature constant. It shouldn't be smoking, and it shouldn't reach any temperature over 390 degrees. 3 Pour the wax into molds or other containers (even a simple plastic food container will work) and allow it to cool. Do I have to list paraffin wax in my list of ingredients if I use it in a recipe?
Q. I'm using paraffin wax to improve the texture and shine of a confection. Because it passes through the body undigested and adds no nutritional value do I have to list it in my ingredients? I'm disappointed no one has offered a source, either from the FDA or a current food product that uses paraffin wax.

A. Yes. It's still an ingredient, and must be included.

A. If the wax is commercially kept in large containers, I"d guess the largest container has the largest "ball". I don't know this info, but it should be available.
