How does a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D get into business world?
Q. Hi, I am a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D student in a prestigious university in US. But I really want to get into business world after Ph.D. I am kinda confused what to do? Can anyone give some suggestions, like what is the baby step to really get started this dream? What is the advantage of materials science and engineering major student to do that? What is the disadvantages? For an engineering background student, what is especially important and challenging for him to interview with a business examiner? Thanks, guys.
Asked by burnfat - Fri May 18 10:06:11 2007 - Technology - 5 Answers - Comments
A. There are a lot of industries that can use smart people, but most of them would not let you use your Ph D. An MBA might help, but you might want to talk to some adventure capitalists active in your field. (Check who has invested in some of the companies active in your industry). They would be looking for the combination of industry knowledge and business sense.

The wax will melt through it. follow up by washing as usual.2. on small amount of hardened wax scrape off material See above. or apply generous amount of vegetable oil to harden wax after scraping. wipe off remove excess oil the wash as usual. 3). SCRAP as usual put stain between 2 paper towels. Using iron on low setting place on paper towel. Wax ill melt and be absorbed by towels. Can someone claim materials for business purposes that was bought before they got a license?
Q. So say a person purchased materials for their business, but did not have a license beforehand...can that person still claim those items? For example, the materials were bought in May but a license was not purchased until July. Between that time, no items were sold. I was just wondering if you needed to purchase materials after getting a license or it doesn't matter, so long it is purchased within the same year. Any help or information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A. when you start your business and you have previously purchased items that become inventory, you will show that on your balance sheet as inventory and that will be offset by your "Contribution" if you don't have an inventory and you have the receipts for the purchase, of course you can prove you bought and it was used in the business not sure what you mean by a licence, in some cases the issuance of a license has nothing to do with what you can and cannot claim if this is a professional license that you were unable to perform the jobs prior to getting the license this might affect your income claim

Q. I just need to know...If I was a home based business who took sales over the phone and delivered the materials myself, what type of credit card machine would I need to take a payment over the phone? would I JUST need a credit card machine...or is it more complicated then just needing that??

A. Visa or Mastercard would give you a machine like the ones carried by the employees in any Apple Computer Store. You enter the credit info and see if the charge is accepted or declined. You pay 2% of each sale for this privilege. Or you could have money wired to you..

to many minutes leads to business phone service?
Q. My brother stays on the phone a lot, and I mean a lot. Last month he racked up more than 4,000 minutes, yes four thousand. I was wondering if anyone know when a phone company starts charging you for a business line?
Asked by Brad C - Sun Apr 19 19:01:34 2009 - Land Phones - 2 Answers - Comments
A. When Vo IP services provide "unlimited" service, they base it on "average" user consumption. There is a point where the service provider will start losing money on fixed-fee unlimited services. However, they don't always make it public as to what that number of minutes is. Obviously, no service provider is going to operate at a loss for very long without pulling the plug on you or requiring you to upgrade to a business account, or extra billing for overage. Often they will post the limit information in the "fine print" under the heading of "Fair Usage" in thier Terms of Service Agreement. Skype does post a notice that they will allow up to 10,000 minutes for their "unlimited" Subscription… [cont.]

What artistic/computer materials do I need to start a greeting card business?
Q. I would like to pursue making greeting cards and selling them at art and craft shows, but I do not know what kind of computer materials I need for graphics. I am very crafty with making cards out of paper, glitter, ribbon and etc, but I do not know how to apply graphics into it. Does anyone know of any good card programs?

A. Well since you're making the cards physically, all you need is graphics software or photomanipulation software and then print on the cardstock taking into account the paper size, orientation, etc. Some nice free programs are GIMP (Windows and Mac) or Seashore (Mac) unless you want to go all the way with Photoshop. The picture you put on the card is another thing. If you are hand drawing the picture then you'll need a scanner or a digital camera and then edit the picture with the software (brightening, coloring, fixing in general). If you're going to be drawing the picture with the software (which I don't fully recommend with GIMP/Seashore. The quality is better with Photoshop... that's why I draw by hand, color later) you may need a… [cont.]

How long should it take to complete business meeting minutes?
Q. I'm in charge of taking the minutes for two monthly board meetings that total about 3 hours. I think I am spending too much time on completing the minutes and was wondering if anyone knows a good rule of thumb for how much time I should be spending on these.
Asked by acalifqt - Tue Sep 18 15:17:10 2007 - Other - Business & Finance - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Just hit the high points, then list action items and who will follow-up. The people in the meeting should be able to take away what they need to with that. 10-20 min is more than enough. (Maybe a bit longer for a very long meeting, perhaps) Don't get too bogged down in the details.

A. Since I've had no problems with Yahoo on my business account, this may not be appropriate to what you're looking for. My first suggestion is read the terms of service agreement, it's changed in the past 2 years and somehow your old agreement terms may be invalid now. Over the holidays, the support staff has been slammed but they have always responded (my experience is different, so take that with a grain of salt). I've included the telephone number for customer care and they may be able to help you further.
