What are smart materials in chemistry?
Q. At the moment in chemistry we're studying polymers and our teacher has asked us to prepare a presentation on a variety of different topics such as: hydrogels, shape-memory polymers and many other similar topics. I've been given smart materials and I have no idea what to include? I've looked for ages at loads of different websites but I can't find any appriopriate information. It seems as if all the topics our teacher has given us are under the large title of smart materials?

A. there is a polymer which is light sensitive which makes plasters so they're not painful to take off (in the AQA book!) Hope i helped!! oo and theres one which fizzy drinks bottles are made from (PET) which is made to be strong, tough and also light so that it can be transported cheaply. There is also one which is about dissolving stitches which doctors are working on.

A. Smart materials are materials that have one or more properties that can be significantly changed in a controlled fashion by external stimuli, such as stress, temperature, moisture, p H, electric or magnetic fields. There are a number of types of smart material, some of which are already common. Some examples are as following: * Piezoelectric materials are materials that produce a voltage when stress is applied. Since this effect also applies in the reverse manner, a voltage across the sample will produce stress Smart Materials in Civil Engineering Applications However, sensual structures need not be restricted to hi-tech applications such as aircraft. They could be used in the monitoring of civil engineering structures to assess durability. [cont.]

TEXTILES. smart materials. Sorry it's so long. =S?
Q. Hi everybody =D i have my GCSE textiles exam in 5 days and im just going over some of my designs. We were given a pre release of what this years theme for the examination will be, night time for children. We have to design a night time themed textiles product for children. It must include at least one smart material on it. Im going to design a blanket for sleeping babies. i was planning on using a "thermochromic material". i was going to have a horizontal strip of this material along the blanket. Thermochromic materials are materials that change colour when it gets too hot. Therefore on my blanket, it would act as a safety feature so parents know if their baby is too hot while sleeping. It says on the internet that in… [cont.]

A. That's a very big and open question and it all depends on your definition of "smart". I work for the Smart Materials and Emerging Technologies Secotr of Materials Knowledge Transfer Network and my definition is "a material that respond reversibly to a stimulus in its environment". Its usually found in a system that is smart because the material is smart. A good example of a smart system is a piezoelectric fuel injector where application of an electric charge to the piezoelectric element causes slight, controllable and rapid changes in its geometry that can be used to mechanically open the injector needle to allow precise amounts of fuel into the combustion chamber. The smart part is the piezoelectric and these are one… [cont.]

A. A shape memory alloy (SMA, smart metal, memory metal, memory alloy, muscle wire, smart alloy) is an alloy that "remembers" its original, cold-forged shape, and which returns to that shape after being deformed by applying heat. This material is a lightweight, solid-state alternative to conventional actuators such as hydraulic, pneumatic, and motor-based systems. Shape memory alloys have applications in industries including medical and aerospace.

A. Smart materials have a load of uses in clothing - Check out 3DO who make sporting "body armour" from a smart material. There are fabric coatings which prvent staining. Also there are clothes with shape memory alloy threads in them which change shape with heat (movie on You Tube) There are jackets which plug into IPods and have the controls on the sleeves, plus solar cells in the shoulders. There is also work being done on "power harvesting" through devices built into shoes. Check out www.smartmat.org for more info on smart materials

A. Stainless steel might be a possibility - or something like a whiteboard so you could have magentic pieces. (nice tie in with traditional street signs. Or how about marquetry - exotic wood veneers inlaid could be good. Normally you are governed by commercial considerations but if you aim for high end deluxe - you have alot oof choice of inlya type materials like marble or semi precious stones to do the colurs and so on.

A. Smart materials are materials that, due to a change in their crystalline structure (martensitic to austenitic structure and back if I remember correctly), change also their shape with a temperature change. It can go from electrical connectors that, when cold, become bigger thus allowing an easy connection and that, at room temperature, create a secure connection AND also easy to break without damage. There was, I think, also an artist that created a statue that was changing from a woman's to a man's shape depending on temperature. These materials can be very useful in the space industry where they can be used to activate the deployment of a solar panel, for example. These materials are not limited to a change of shape with temperature but… [cont.]
