Sound is a sequence of waves of pressure which propagates through compressible media such as air or water. (Sound can propagate through solids as well, but there are additional modes of propagation). During their propagation, waves can be reflected, refracted, or attenuated by the medium. The behaviour of sound propagation is generally affected by three things:

Q. I have my computer hooked up via HDMI to my tv and the sound and video works fine, and I also have my speakers hooked up to my computer and that sound works too. I will assume Windows since it is the most common. Your video playback program would have to be able to allow you to specify more than one audio device at a time for playback. Windows Media Player doesn't do this. Besides, even if you could get the sound out from multiple devices, it wouldn't be true surround sound and you'd just end up with dual stereo which wouldn't sound anything like surround sound.
