Sound

Sound is a sequence of waves of pressure which propagates through compressible media such as air or water. (Sound can propagate through solids as well, but there are additional modes of propagation). During their propagation, waves can be reflected, refracted, or attenuated by the medium.

The behaviour of sound propagation is generally affected by three things:

  • A relationship between density and pressure. This relationship, affected by temperature, determines the speed of sound within the medium.
  • The propagation is also affected by the motion of the medium itself. For example, sound moving through wind. Independent of the motion of sound through the medium, if the medium is moving, the sound is further transported.
  • The viscosity of the medium also affects the motion of sound waves. It determines the rate at which sound is attenuated. For many media, such as air or water, attenuation due to viscosity is negligible.

However, when sound is moving through a medium which does not have constant physical properties, it is refracted (either dispersed or focused).

What do you call that sound with a DJ scratch and then something really awkward happens?
Q. So I'm planning on making a short movie and I thought about adding that sound effect in my movie, it's like something normal is happening and then all of a sudden you hear like a DJ scratch sound and everything is awkward, do you guys know what that sound is called? I really wanna add it to my sound effect collection but I don't know what it's called =( Thanks~!

A. I know exactly what you are referring to but there is no name for it other then "record scratch" or "needle scratch". It is often used in advertising, especially radio, to show that something is amiss or things are not what they seem. I saw quite a few places you can find it by typing in needle scratch into google. Good Luck.

How do I play my computer sound through my speakers as well as my tv?
Q. I have my computer hooked up via HDMI to my tv and the sound and video works fine, and I also have my speakers hooked up to my computer and that sound works too. But I only can play sound through one of them, is there a way to play the sound through both the tv and speakers?? Its sort of like a surround sound setup. Thanks in advance!

A. You didn't specify what operating system or hardware you are using. I will assume Windows since it is the most common. Your video playback program would have to be able to allow you to specify more than one audio device at a time for playback. Windows Media Player doesn't do this. Besides, even if you could get the sound out from multiple devices, it wouldn't be true surround sound and you'd just end up with dual stereo which wouldn't sound anything like surround sound.
