Need to find materials with high tensile strength and high elasticity?
Q. I trying to think of a better object to replace a rubber band in a propeller for a toy car but I want it to be stronger. The object / material doesn't necessarily have to accessible to me , it just has to exist.

A. You can use a strip of rubber from car tires or bike tires or sling shots. These are far better from an ordinary rubber band.

Maximum tensile force for cable made of different materials?
Q. I'm completely lost on this question. I have a cable made of four strands of four different materials, all behaving by sigma = K * epsilon^n, where n=0.5. I have the K of all the cables as well as their respective cross-sections (A0). Where do I go from there?
Asked by John C - Sun Sep 27 20:55:31 2009 - Engineering - 1 Answers - Comments

A. You have to look at the strains. When under tension each strand will have the same extension.

What materials have the greatest toughness, compressive strength, and tensile strength?
Q. Don't think there's much more to add, save that I'm doing some research for a story and looking for a material that can have a sizable pocket of vacuum in the middle without imploding. Manufacturing difficulties are irrelevant.
Asked by Shay Guy - Mon Jul 7 22:07:20 2008 - Physics - 2 Answers - Comments

A. This depends greatly upon your application. Cured concrete has very high compressive strength and low tensile strength. (but depends a lot upon the shape too) Carbon fiber and carbon nanotubes have high total tensile strength, but their compressive strength depends upon their alignment. Steel can be a good balance of both compressive and tensile, espeically depending upon the type of steel, but may not exceed either of the above singly. Really hard to answer without knowing more about the constraints of your project. bye for now! EDIT Sorry did not see comment about vacumn in center. Do a search on submarine hull materials and you'll get good results. Such as... "Don't think so. It says hull is made out of 'carbon fibre', not CFRP.… [cont.]

What materials have a low Young's modulus and a high tensile strength?
Q. Will it be good for a bungee cord?
Asked by HKC - Tue Nov 16 14:04:20 2010 - Engineering - 1 Answers - Comments

A. well for a bungee cord it has got high yield strength... if you want a material want a material with low young's modulus there is rubber with wit 0.1 GPA and tensile strength of 15 MPA and for high tensile strength there is steel with 841 MPA and young's modulus of 200 GPA... so as young's modulus increase tensile strength increase..

how can i remove white candle wax from a black business pencil skirt?
Q. i specified the type of skirt so as to say that there are no ruffles, etc. which may hide this wax... i need to get out like every little bit, so hit me with your best suggestion! thanks =)
Asked by princess_kitty - Mon Jan 24 01:29:41 2011 - Cleaning & Laundry - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Freeze it then scrape off as much as possible. take the skirt put then stain over a bowel secure it with a rubber band then pour hot water over stain. The wax will melt through it. follow up by washing as usual.2. on small amount of hardened wax scrape off material See above. or apply generous amount of vegetable oil to harden wax after scraping. wipe off remove excess oil the wash as usual. 3). SCRAP as usual put stain between 2 paper towels. Using iron on low setting place on paper towel. Wax ill melt and be absorbed by towels. Repeat until all wax is gone. wash as usual. be careful not to over heat the material as it could damage it.

When tensile testing materials...?
Q. When tensile testing materials, when materials fracture, are you physically breaking chemical bonds?
Asked by n92305 - Thu Feb 12 19:15:53 2009 - Engineering - 1 Answers - Comments

A. No. Usually you are breaking the bonds between molecules, which are held together by electromagnetic forces. But you don't break up the molecules themselves, so you are not changing the chemical makeup of the material.

for tensile test, How do materials behave to each other?
Q. Aluminum Cast iron Low carbon steel Polyethylene Polypropylene Epoxy Rubber these are the samples. and, how does the cast iron specimen compare with the low carbon steel? what is the different behaviors?...
Asked by Nina - Sun Jul 22 19:25:34 2007 - Engineering - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Some of these samples will elongate a great deal while getting thinner the whole time, and not regain their original shape (plastic deformation). Polyethylene is the best example of this. Some will elongate and get thinner, but then snap back to their origianl shape (elastic deformation), like rubber. Elongating and getting thinner is ductility. Recovering the shape represents elasticity. Low carbon steel will elongate and up to a certain deformation limit, it will recover its shape (elastic deformation). Beyond a certain point, it will not completely recover its shape (plastic deformation). Cast iron will not elongate or get thinner to any appreciable degree. It will rupture before this happens. This behavior is defined as brittleness.… [cont.]

How does a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D get into business world?
Q. Hi, I am a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D student in a prestigious university in US. But I really want to get into business world after Ph.D. I am kinda confused what to do? Can anyone give some suggestions, like what is the baby step to really get started this dream? What is the advantage of materials science and engineering major student to do that? What is the disadvantages? For an engineering background student, what is especially important and challenging for him to interview with a business examiner? Thanks, guys.
Asked by burnfat - Fri May 18 10:06:11 2007 - Technology - 5 Answers - Comments

A. There are a lot of industries that can use smart people, but most of them would not let you use your Ph D. An MBA might help, but you might want to talk to some adventure capitalists active in your field. (Check who has invested in some of the companies active in your industry). They would be looking for the combination of industry knowledge and business sense.

I ve a techie question. Regarding tensile tests in materials. I wish to monitor the temperature of my sample?
Q. How do I monitor the temp of a pariticular point on my sample constantly? using pyrometers
Asked by naveen - Tue May 22 09:47:02 2007 - Engineering - 2 Answers - Comments

A. I would use a handheld optical infra red thermometer similar to the ones on the link below, also in the links below is one for an optical pyrometer you will then need to just devise a simple stand to hold it in the correct position to monitor your test point. What exactly are you looking for, simply the shear point verus temp , are will you be looking for compositional changes will you be using an Scanning Electron microscope .are you applying heat only to one point on the sample is this why the point of measurement is so critical, just curious

Can someone claim materials for business purposes that was bought before they got a license?
Q. So say a person purchased materials for their business, but did not have a license beforehand...can that person still claim those items? For example, the materials were bought in May but a license was not purchased until July. Between that time, no items were sold. I was just wondering if you needed to purchase materials after getting a license or it doesn't matter, so long it is purchased within the same year. Any help or information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Asked by Fetch My Cabbage - Sun Aug 1 08:14:28 2010 - United States - 4 Answers - Comments

A. when you start your business and you have previously purchased items that become inventory, you will show that on your balance sheet as inventory and that will be offset by your "Contribution" if you don't have an inventory and you have the receipts for the purchase, of course you can prove you bought and it was used in the business not sure what you mean by a licence, in some cases the issuance of a license has nothing to do with what you can and cannot claim if this is a professional license that you were unable to perform the jobs prior to getting the license this might affect your income claim
