I have spilt some wax from a candle on a thick piled carpet. How do I remove it.?
Q. A candle ran hot wax onto the carpet leaving a thick trace. I have since removed the thickest part of the wax but am left with rather a lot of dry wax in the pile of the carpet. Not too sure how to remove it without spoiling the carpet.
Asked by George T - Wed Jan 2 11:01:09 2008 - Cleaning & Laundry - 6 Answers - Comments

A. Put icecubes in a zip loc baggie. Place baggie on top of wax and allow to sit for about 20-30 min. The using a butterknife (dull) scrape the wax up out of the carpet. It may take a few attempts to get it all (freeze, scrape, freeze, scrape, etc.) but it can be done. The ice will freeze or harden the wax making it easier to "scrape or flake" off. The baggie keeps the area from getting saturated with water!

How does a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D get into business world?
Q. Hi, I am a Materials Science and Engineering Ph D student in a prestigious university in US. But I really want to get into business world after Ph.D. I am kinda confused what to do? Can anyone give some suggestions, like what is the baby step to really get started this dream? What is the advantage of materials science and engineering major student to do that? What is the disadvantages? For an engineering background student, what is especially important and challenging for him to interview with a business examiner? Thanks, guys.

A. There are a lot of industries that can use smart people, but most of them would not let you use your Ph D. An MBA might help, but you might want to talk to some adventure capitalists active in your field. (Check who has invested in some of the companies active in your industry). They would be looking for the combination of industry knowledge and business sense.

A. Grey is good year round. A really light colored grey might be best for Spring/Summer, but a darker grey would be great in the Fall/Winter.

Is it possible for hair on the legs to be too thick for wax strips to sucessfully pull much of it off?
Q. Has anyone ever seen this happen at their salon? A customer comes in with thick hair on their armpits for example that doesn't seem to respond to being pulled by the wax?
Asked by Wilderness - Tue Jun 10 01:52:35 2008 - Other - Skin & Body - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Hair cannot be too thick, it can be too long but that still does not result in the hair not coming off it will just be more painful. I've never heard of someone going for a wax and it being unsuccessful.

Are dark gray or black business cards tacky?
Q. I'd appreciate your opinions on that. My friend thinks they're tacky, but I don't. I'm making a card for my graphic design business; it's a dark gray with abstract lighting with white logos asymmetrically layered over it, with simple words in a light teal so it's not monochromatic.
Asked by Mary - Mon Jan 31 21:56:12 2011 - Etiquette - 6 Answers - Comments

A. For your type of business, the darker colour wouldn't be tacky. If the business card was for a law firm or accountant's office, then it would be. Your business card is, in part, an advertisement for your business, so if you're in graphic design, of course you wouldn't want plain white.

Can someone claim materials for business purposes that was bought before they got a license?
Q. So say a person purchased materials for their business, but did not have a license beforehand...can that person still claim those items? For example, the materials were bought in May but a license was not purchased until July. Between that time, no items were sold. I was just wondering if you needed to purchase materials after getting a license or it doesn't matter, so long it is purchased within the same year. Any help or information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Asked by Fetch My Cabbage - Sun Aug 1 08:14:28 2010 - United States - 4 Answers - Comments

A. when you start your business and you have previously purchased items that become inventory, you will show that on your balance sheet as inventory and that will be offset by your "Contribution" if you don't have an inventory and you have the receipts for the purchase, of course you can prove you bought and it was used in the business not sure what you mean by a licence, in some cases the issuance of a license has nothing to do with what you can and cannot claim if this is a professional license that you were unable to perform the jobs prior to getting the license this might affect your income claim

Q. I just need to know...If I was a home based business who took sales over the phone and delivered the materials myself, what type of credit card machine would I need to take a payment over the phone? would I JUST need a credit card machine...or is it more complicated then just needing that??
Asked by RachelLeAnn - Mon Nov 24 16:58:24 2008 - Other - Business & Finance - 2 Answers - Comments

A. Visa or Mastercard would give you a machine like the ones carried by the employees in any Apple Computer Store. You enter the credit info and see if the charge is accepted or declined. You pay 2% of each sale for this privilege. Or you could have money wired to you..

A. business licenses from your city and/or county, a sales tax certificate if you will be selling products, and I'm sure you should need some type of cosmotology license to open that type of business. I know people who wax eyebrows have to be certified or officially trained.
