How do i remove wax build up from my cabinets?
Q. I just bought a new house... My cabinets have wax build up on them. Its milky white in color and really heavy around the edges and in the grains (They are oak and have large grains) its also built up a little It doesnt appear that they were supposed to be waxed. How do I remove it without sanding/stripping?

A. Use vinegar and an old toothbrush, repeat, repeat, repeat. It's time consuming to remove. If this is not wax buidup as you suspect and they are sticking when you open, it's more than likely the finish on your cabinets did not cure properly before the maker/manufacturer added another coat. It happens a lot. If that is the case, the only way to remove the stickiness is to strip the finish and start over. Icky job, but that's your only alternative. You can't do anything to a bad finish other than that. You can't add any sort of hardener, etc., or it will just take your cabinets from bad to worse. Best of luck to you and let's hope it's just wax and that it'll be a cinch to remove! Congrats on your new home.

How to wax by pulling the hairs from their roots?
Q. I have just started to wax my arms and legs but I realised that when I was waxing them, I was not pulling the hairs from the root, instead was just taking the tops off of the hairs. I followed the instructions on the packaging and everything, could someone please explain to me where I am going wrong and how to prevent it? Thanks!

How much wax does it take to hot wax a snowboard?
Q. I've never waxed my snowboard, and i'm looking at wax, and they sell in different amounts (5 oz, 3/4 lbs, ect). Lets say I bought a 3/4 lb brick. How many waxes would that get me? How much does it take each wax? Thanks ahead of time!
Asked by Cole S - Tue Dec 11 02:13:54 2007 - Snowboarding - 2 Answers - Comments

A. It doesn't take alot to wax your board. Probably an ounce or two. I gather up what I scrape off and reuse it the next time I wax my board so it goes a long ways. 3/4 of a lb would probably do about 10 waxes, depending on how thick you put it on. 5 oz would do 3-5 times.

wax???
Q. at home wax kits do they work??? if so what brand
Asked by sparkle xo - Sat Dec 1 14:25:23 2007 - Hair - 3 Answers - Comments

A. There are three kinds of wax kits that I've come across. One requires the use of the microwave and if the wax is too hot it can burn the skin. The other wax kit consists of strips on some kind of backing that you place on your skin and the heat from your body and hands as you rub it in place makes the was pliable enough for you to remove the backing. The third is sugar wax and you need muslin or linen strips to remove the hair. I found the last method the messiest. They both adhere to the hairs on your body and once the wax has a chance to cool you are to hold an area on your skin down and rip/pull the wax in the opposite direction of hair growth pulling out the hair by the roots. Either way it can be painful the first few times and the… [cont.]

Asked by pollitrescu - Fri Sep 28 20:16:38 2007 - Other - Skin & Body - 6 Answers - Comments

A. I really wouldn't recommend shaving any part you have mentioned. I decided over 18 months ago that I hated being so hairy but I was a bit nervous about having a big area waxed. So I started of just having my back done which I was really happy with. The next time I got my chest done as well and then the time after that I got my under arms done too (not anything like as painful as you might imagine). The last three times, I've gone the whole way and got my legs and buttocks done alone with all of the above. I haven't had my forearms done yet because the hair there is relatively fine and short. However, I may get them done for completeness in future. The place I go to doesn't do male Brazilian/Hollywood (they only go as far as "bikini&quo [cont.]

What happens if you never take wax off your car?
Q. I've heard to properly detail a car you have have to take off wax every so often. What happens if you only wax the car but never remove old wax?
Asked by John K - Wed Mar 9 01:37:50 2011 - Other - Cars & Transportation - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Nature does a great job of removing wax from your car, you don't have to worry about it. Pure Carnauba wax lasts only a couple months on a car parked outdoors. Better waxes with additives can last 6 months and silicone treatments can go 9 months or slightly more. After those periods of time, however, the wax protection has been worn off by UV rays of the sun, rain, morning dew, wind and car washing. The only wax I have to remove during detail jobs is the white cruddy buildup left by sloppy wax jobs around windows, body seams and around emblems.

How do I remove built up wax on my clay tile floors that are 80 years old?
Q. We live in a mediterranean style home built in the twenties. Old wax is chipping off the tile floors and the tile underneath the wax appears to be unglazed. I'm afraid I'll take the aged look away if I strip the wax, but I can't get a smooth application of Johnson's Plaza with little pieces of wax flecking off.

A. Your in a tough spot here with this floor.. By best suggestion would be to work small areas at a time with a scrubber and warm water and a small bit of mild ph clothing detergent like woolite or ivory snow. You may luck out and find an old scrubber in a thrift shop... As you do a small patch rinse with clear water and dry with terry towels. Then rinse the flooe again and dry with the towel till there is no residue. An electric scrubber with brushes is the best to use. Otherwise it's hands and knees time.

Candle wax left stain on carpet, ideas to get it out?
Q. At a party we recently hosted a guest accidently tipped a red candle over. The wax made a puddle about two-three inches in diameter on my beige carpet. I was able to remove all the wax but the stain remains. We try to use organic cleaners or home remedies due to my husbands inability to stand strong chemical smells. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Asked by Jamie S - Sun Apr 27 13:27:27 2008 - Cleaning & Laundry - 4 Answers - Comments

A. Any cleaner that is water based will not help since the stain is oil based. You can try covering the area with baking soda, placing a weighted object over it, then see if it pulls out any of the color, but I don't think it will get rid the stain completely. I suggest you hire a professional carpet cleaner.

How come when you heat wax and stick it in water it explodes?
Q. How come when you heat wax and stick it in water it explodes? This is a science lab i did in class and my teacher is giving out extra credit if i can figure out why the wax combusted. I already know that vaporised water forces the liquid wax into the air, but why does it go on fire. Thanks. I am wondering why when the wax is put into the water fire shoots out. Their is then a huge wax explosion.
Asked by drocker55 - Wed Dec 5 16:40:35 2007 - Chemistry - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The wax doesn't actually explode, which is an exothermic reaction, but when the cool water contacts the hot wax, it causes a rapid contraction of the wax which causes it to rapidly come apart. Since much of the wax is still brittle yet still hot, it's unable to relieve the stress of rapid cooling so it breaks down. Many brittle materials, like glass, for example, do the same thing when heated and rapidly cooled.

How can I clean old wax out of a candle holder?
Q. I once learned of a trick (that many may know) to put the holder in the freezer, and the remaining pool of wax would pop right out. It works wonders! However, after doing that several times, the wax buildup around the other parts of the holder tends to build up and doesn't quite freeze since there isn't much of it. It is waxy and messy; when I try to clean it it just spreads it around. What is the easiest way to clean up the remaining wax? I have tried soap and water with a sponge, with not much luck. It removes some of it, but there must be another trick? Any ideas?
