A. 1) Why the top surface of a leaf is Darker ( Darker green I presume ) ? Ans.1 ) The palisade cells near the upper epidermis are full of chloropasts with green chlorophyll and are more green in color . As compared to the upper epidermis the cells near the lower epidermis have less chloroplast and hence pale green color . click on the links to see - The cuticle is always a transparent "see through" covering , so it can show the color of under lying tissue , which is green iin the present case . 2 )How would a waxy surface on the upper epidermis of leaves prevent water evaporation? Ans.2 ) Waxy cuticle on the upper leaf surface is a water proof coating . It does not allow the water to escape during transpiration. During night time… [cont.]

How does having small, waxy leaves help a plant reduce its moisture loss in the savanna?
Q. I need the correct answer please, thanks.
Asked by - Tue Mar 1 15:55:29 2011 - Botany - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Savannah lands, by definition, have a dry season. During this time a plant must reduce its water loss. It may do this in a number of ways: 1. a waxy coating helps to seal in the moisture (and will sometimes deter damage by insects), 2. Large surface areas tend to "dry out" in parched conditions. On balance the plant is better off having small, waxy leaves rather than large soft leaves. The alternative is for a plant to produce large, soft leaves and shed them during the dry season but this is costly to the plant in terms of wasted effort in regularly having to produce the new leaves. A savannah will usually contain plants in both categories.

A. Schultz makes a leaf shine that you can get at most garden centers. Put the plant in the shower and get the dust off, then spray as directed when the leaves are dry.

What is a plant that has small light orange and yellow flowers in clusters? The leaves are thick and waxy.?
Q. The flowers seem to start out very light and get darker as they grow. There are many flowers in the clusters. It is about 1 ft tall now. I can't figure out what it is after looking online for 3 days now and want to know how to properly care for it. Thank you for your answers so far. I looked up your suggestions, but didn't find a match. The flowers are about a half an inch wide in very tight clusters. Each cluster has between 30 and 50 flowers in it.

A. I was reading about spotted wilt today. I will post below.. It might help explain but do some searches on the internet to see if it looks simular to what images are posted to make sure you got the right one. Viruses There are several different viruses that affect tomatoes. Mosaic, spotted wilt, wilt, etc. The only way to rid the plant of viruses is to dig up the plant. Never compost any plant with a virus, as you might transmit the virus to additional plants. Viruses are easily transmitted from one plant to another with tools, so always clean your tools after you ve worked with an infected plant, before you work with an un-infected plant.

A. cutin Here's a more formal answer from wiki... Cutin From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Cutin is one of two waxy polymers that are the main components of the plant cuticle which covers all aerial surfaces of plants. The other major cuticle polymer, which is much more readily preserved in the fossil record,[1] is cutan. Cutin consists of omega hydroxy acids and their derivatives which are interlinked via ester bonds, forming a polyester polymer of indeterminate size. There are two major monomer families of cutin, the C16 and C18 families. The C16 family consists mainly of 16-hydroxy palmitic acid and 9,16 or 10,16-dihydroxypalmitic acid. The C18 family consists mainly of 18-hydroxyoleic acid, 9,10-epoxy-18-hydr [cont.]

How does waxy leaves help water hyacinth stay afloat?
Q. Thanks for your help
Asked by Aini - Mon May 3 14:20:20 2010 - Botany - 3 Answers - Comments

A. The waxy coat of the water hyacinth leaves is waterproof and covers a spongy parenchyma tissue. Together with its swollen stem, which is filled with more spongy parenchyma tissue, it makes the plant float. Imagine a lettuce leave without this waxy coat: it will float in water for a pretty while, but finally be soaked up with water and sink.
